Just Another Monday

Today I got this picture in the mail from my Nana. It's of my Papa, or Harold the Great as he liked to call himself (he always told us we were related to Royalty...didn't we know?). Papa passed away a few years ago, he served in the British Navy for the Second World War as well as the Koren War. His ship, the HMS Hecla, was torpedoed during WWII and he survived to tell about it, or not tell about it too much as many soldiers don't. He told very few stories about the war to us as kids but when he did they were hard to believe. I'm only realizing now the importance of those times and wish that I would have been more aware growing up and asked more questions and heard more stories. Gord, who never met Papa, took one look at the picture and said 'Whoa, you look just like your Papa'. Nobody has ever thought that. When I told my Nana she said if you were going to take after somebody Papa would be a great person to take after and I think she's right!
Tonight we also baked Lemon Doodle cookies. They were delicious and so easy. Here's the Recipe: Turn oven to 375 degrees 1/2 C butter, softened 3/4 C of sugar 1 egg 1tsp lemon zest (I used a whole lemon) 1C flour 1/2tsp baking powder 1/8tsp salt 2tbsp extra sugar, 2tsp of cinnamon(I used a bit more) for coating Beat sugar and butter together, add egg and lemon zest and beat again. In a separate bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt, stir together. Add it a bit at a time to the sugar/butter mixture and mix well. Roll into 1 inch balls. Coat the ball in the sugar/cinnamon mixture Bake for 8-10 minutes. Makes about 24 cookies. YUM!
